I am 5 feet and 2 inches, so I had the dress hemmed professionally. I wore 4-inch heels the day of my wedding and they were the perfect height to ensure the dress draped the way it was designed to. For alterations, extra boning was added to the bodice to ensure a great fit in the waist area. Also, my seamstress added bustle for dancing at the reception.
